gypsy wagon knits: yarn weight guide

gypsy wagon knits: yarn weight guide

Yarn Weight can be a very confusing subject for some knitters. Even more confusing — there are different names for each weight! Here is some basic information to help you along with choosing the best yarn for your next knitting project.

There are 8 Standard Yarn Weight classifications. Yarn Weight refers to the thickness of the yarn, not by the weight of the skein or ball. And the type of fiber will factor into how many meters are in the skein. For Instance, a meter of mohair weighs less than a meter of wool, and therefore, a 50g skein of mohair will have more meters of yarn on it than a 50g skein of wool. So, best to always check both the weight and meters on the label

This is the standard weight legend that you will commonly see on a yarn’s band.

Yarn Weight

Lace (0)

This lightest weight yarn is lace. Most knitters use lace for openwork lace patterns — It is very fine and delicate, amazingly, can be quite strong. On order to create the open patterns, you need larger needles.

  • Recommended needle size for Lace is 1.5 – 2.25 mm or 000-1
  • 600 – 800m per 100g, on average
  • Gauge: 8 – 8.5 sts = 1″ on US 1-3 needles
  • Wraps Per Inch: 33 – 40
  • 1 or 2 ply
  • For LACE Yarn– CLICK HERE

Super Fine (1)

This is super popular for projects like lightweight lacy socks, scarves, and shawls. It is sometimes called fingering yarn, or sock yarn. There is a lot of yarn on each skein. 100g is usually enough for a pair of socks. There is a huge range, with some called light fingering”

  • Recommend needle size for super fine is 2.25 – 3.25 mm, US 1 – 3
  • Gauge: 7.5 – 8 sts = 1″
  • Wraps per inch: 14
  • 3 or 4 ply
  • For SUPERFINE Yarn– CLICK HERE

Fine (2)

Also called as sport weight or baby yarn. This is just slightly heavier than the thicker superfine/sock yarn. Fine yarn is excellent for lightweight sweaters, baby clothes, and scarves. Knitters can use 3.25 – 3.75 mm needles when handling sports weight

  • Recommend needle size for fine is 3.25 – 3.75 mm, US 3 – 5
  • 300 – 350 m per 100g, on average
  • Gauge: 6 -7 sts = 1″ on US 4 needles
  • Wraps per inch: 12
  • 3 or 4 ply
  • For FINE Yarn– CLICK HERE

Light (3)

Typically called DK, double knitting, or light worsted. DK is an enormously popular yarn weight for sweaters, accessories, blankets, and shawls.

  • Recommend needle size for light is 3.75 – 4.5 mm, US 5 – 6
  • 220 m per 100g, on average
  • Gauge: 5.25 – 6 sts = 1″
  • Wraps per inch: 11
  • 8 ply
  • For LIGHT Yarn– CLICK HERE

Medium (4)

Very common, and just slightly heavier, it is also called Worsted, or Aran — I feel that Worsted is a bit lighter, and Aran is on the heavier side of the medium range. Very common for heavier sweaters, like Irish Guernseys and Jerseys.

  • Recommend needle size for light is 4.5 – 5.5 mm, US 7-9
  • 120 – 200 m per 100g, on average
  • Gauge: 4 – 5 sts = 1″
  • Wraps per inch: 8 – 9
  • 10 ply
  • For MEDIUM Yarn– CLICK HERE

Bulky (5)

Often called chunky, this is thick and warm. Great for outerwear and accessories like hats and scarfs. Other types of bulky yarn are craft and rug, but these are generally not suitable for clothing.

  • Recommend needle size for light is 5.5 – 8 mm, US 9 – 11
  • 80 – 120 m per 100g on average
  • Gauge: 3 – 3.7sts
  • Wraps per inch: 6 – 8
  • 12 – 16 ply
  • For BULKY Yarn– CLICK HERE

Super bulky (6)

Also called Roving and Jumbo. These yarns knit up quickly, and are perfect for hats, scarves and bulky sweaters. are perfect for hats and scarves for they knit up very quickly.

  • Recommend needle size for light is 8 – 12.75 mm, US 11 – 17
  • Under 80 m per 100g, on average
  • Gauge: 2 – 3 sts on US 11 needles
  • Wraps per inch: 5 – 6
  • unknown ply

day 100 of #tracywearswool: Halleluiah!

day 100 of #tracywearswool: Halleluiah!

Day 100 of the #tracywearswool dress challenge — I made it!!  Halleluiah!!

But the ending is bittersweet.  It’s like reading a great book… and when you reach the end… you wish it wasn’t over!

I can’t explain ALL the benefits of this challenge, and it is going to be different for everyone.

Although it starts with the dress, it is more than that:

I chose to blog about my experience because I wanted to develop a better blogging habit.  The dress challenge gave me the perfect platform for doing this. I blogged every day for the 100 days, and a few days before!

Body image — I can say the insecurity and embarrassment/shame that I have about my own body… has improved tremendously.  Taking 100 selfies will do that to you.  And being involved with a huge group of people, who are also taking daily selfies, and none of whom have the “standardized perfect bodies”. Instead, I have grown to believe that we all have perfect bodies for where we are in life… and we should love them!

It’s ok to open up and be completely vulnerable, even publicly and in front of people you barely know.  Not only OK… but empowering.  Own It. Love It. Live It.

If a group of people can unite together over a small clothing item, and become a huge supporting network for everyone, a safe haven, a refuge…. then I have greater hope for humanity.

Most people don’t notice what I wear, and generally don’t really care. Most people also seem to think I look better than I think I do.

New friends are out there waiting to be found.

Several days after taking a photo…. I seem to look better than I thought I did when I first looked at the photograph.

And finally, I can wear the same article of clothing for 100 days, not repeat the same outfit, never get bored of what I am wearing, and…. still love the dress in the end.

I will stick around in the Facebook group to add encouragement to the friends who I have made that started after I did.

And I will also join my friends in the over 10o days Facebook group who started before me.

And… I get to start wearing my Sierra tomorrow, and order my reward dress!!

Old Favorite — GAP 100% linen oversized shirts in a flax color.  I just love this, perfect for warm weather.

Scarf was a recent find at a local charity thrift store. Squishy and mustard.  I love it.

day 99 of #tracywearswool: miles from nowhere

Day 99 of the #tracywearswool dress challenge — it is down to the wire.

I am out in a remote little town on the Long Beach Peninsula in Southern Washington… pretty much miles from nowhere — if you are used to living in a city.  But I love it here, and I love the smallness of it all.

And not far away is a fabulous Yarn Shop in the town of Illwaco: Purly Shell Fiber Arts.

99 #tracywearswool

They do lot of their own dyeing, and spinning, and also carry a select variety of commercial yarn.  I was thrilled at this season’s hand dyed wool — with names picked from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

(Wait…. shouldn’t that be Wooly Wonka??)

day 98 of #tracywearswool: ring of fire

Day 98 of the #tracywearswool dress challenge — and I was supposed to be in Portland today.

But, I am not.  Instead of meeting a fellow Woolander and going for a walk, I am still at the beach.  Not that THAT is so terrible… it is, after all … the BEACH.

I found a tie-die shirt that I was going to wear on our walk because this person seems to be particularly fond of tie-die.  So, I am wearing it anyway, even though we are not together.

It seems a little washed out in the top photo… so here is another. (Me, looking like I think I’m a movie star, or something!)

What’s in store today:

I drove over to the local Thrift store — my daughter and I are starting an online used bookstore through Amazon: Gypsy Rambler Books.  We are hoping to put low cost quality books into the hands of interested readers. Today, I went looking for books. Will let you know how it goes — and when I get a page set up for it.

98 #tracywearswool

This shirt is not only tie-die, but also has beadwork and sequins.  What is not to lve about that!! I know that MyDaughter the Chef is probably cringing!

Cute label — I love the design!

98 #tracywearswool

I decided to have a bit of fun with my hair.  While I didn’t find any books that I wanted to buy, I found several — like 5 — great light weight scarves, perfect to festive-up my dress for summer.  Looking forward to  adding them to my next dress as well!

98 #tracywearswool

I am ot even sure if this is the proper way to wrap one’s head, but I kind of thought I would twist it up into a Frieda Kahlo meets Rosie the Riveter style rosette.

Scarf is infinity style, with pineapples.

I had the chance to pull out my Chaco Ped Shed shoes.

I have had them for years, and don’t know why I don’t wear them more — super comfy — mad by the sandal folks.

And CHACO makes Great Sport Shoes!

Day 97 of the #tracywearswool dress challenge — and I will survive… and thrive.

I have survived purging my closet and gotten rid of tons of clothes.   I have survived cutting off 2 feet of hair.  And I have survived wearing the same dress for almost 100 days. I Pretty amazing.

It is about thriving.   And I feel I have thrived with this challenge.  I have thrived with the dress. And I have thrived with the generous and kind, and thoughtful and committed community of Woolanders around the world.  As it is winding down, I can look back at all the growth.  And it makes me happy.

Day 96 of  #tracywearswool, and this mama does dance!

And if you don’t believe me, you can check out my Appalachian Flatfooting and Clogging page.

I signed up for a class, after a free trial on Facebook.  And it had some interesting side effects.

Not only did I learn the physical steps and routines — which I admit, were a bit of a challenge for me — it changed something else: I find myself dancing at random times. My feet just start to move to the music at the grocery store.  I figure out the time, and sort of bippity bop through the aisles.  And I don’t care if people see me.

For me THIS IS HUGE.  I have spent most all of my life as a non-dancer, and was ashamed of the way my body moved to music.  I felt awkard and embarassed.

Now, I love it… and i just don’t care what others think. So if you are like I was… consider taking a class.  It will change your attitude on life!

I love this orchid JJill shirt — it is linen tunic style with great buttons. And it has been in my closet for a couple of yearas, and this is the FIRST time I have actually worn it.  Why? I don’t know.  I never felt that I could pair it with other clothes creatively.

But I love all it’s attributes — and think it goes well with the dress, when I add a few other accessories —  colorful purse and headband, and my trusty denim vest from Cabella’s.
