living the rv lifestyle

Going from Real Estate to Wheel Estate.

You may wondering why some people decide to live full time in their RVs.

For me… It was just the right time in life.  I had gone from living in my parents home, to living with a boyfriend, to life with roommates in college.  Followed by getting married, having kids, and raising them up.  Then a period of kids moving in and out… and then… suddenly.. I was going to be alone!  Pretty much for the first time in my life, I was going to be living on my own.

My kids and family thought I was crazy, like the cheese had slid off the cracker.  I got a fair amount of sympathy — oh shoot… you will be homeless…. and offers to stay on people’s couches.  But this was an exciting opportunity,I thought! A chance to reinvent myself and become the person I really wanted to be: a singing, music playing, knitting, watercoloring, traveling gypsy.  Sounded pretty good to me.

So, in 2017, I bought my first full-time RV — a Volkswagon Rialta.  And it was LIFE CHANGING!!

And with that, I started my nomadic lifestyle!!  I went to music festivals and camps, stayed in friends driveways, urban camped, and took trips up and down the pacific coastline.  Absolutely glorious. Had a terrific time.

It opened up the perfect opportunity to find out who I was… and who I wanted to be. And I decided that I could reinvent myself into the best version of me.  I feel we can choose… and so I choose happiness. and Kindness. And Music, and knitting and art.

And I decided to stop apologizing for my artistic abilities– and just own them — and stop caring about what others think.

I tried living in a stick house for a bit — in Santa Barbara, where I grew up.

But after a month-long evacuation from a fire, a mudslide, and the house I was in going on the market… I only lasted a few months before I took to the road again.  Eventually, I discovered Camp Hosting — where you stay for free in your RV, in exchange for volunteering. Perfect for what I want to be doing: staying in an area with the entire campground as my backyard… and the flexibility to have time to travel, between host positions.

In 2018, I decided to upgrade  I loved my Rialta, but 20′ doesn’t give you a lot of room. That’s it in the photo above.  Comfy, but a little cramped!

So I am now in a 25′ class c, with a slide.  So much more room!  Perfect size for me, the Dude and Rainey, 3 guitars, 4 ukuleles, 2 drums, tons of yarn and knitting tools, lots of watercolor supplies, and my blogging-from-home work set up.  And I have a full size shower, to boot!

Although it is not for everyone, and it may not be forever, it has been truly amazing.  I meet interesting people everyday, from all over. So stay tuned as I post new content on what I feel is the perfect life!!
