day 8: different drum

day 8: different drum

Those of us in the #100daydresschallenge travel to the beat of a different drum. Mostly one that resonates with minimalism, sustainability, and camaraderie.  We are a group moving together, but still separately.  We each have our own agenda and our own start date.

In that vein, I am also doing a 7-day Bodhran challenge and learning to play this amazing Irish drum.  This challenge is graciously put on for free, open to anyone, through the Facebook   Traddrumers Group

It is taught by the amazingly talented and ever-so-patient Aimée Farrell Courtney. I understand that she does private lessons, and I will be seriously looking into that.  The group also hosts jams and play alongs.  So I’m honing my skills privately — but look out once the pandemic is over!!

And Yesterday, I found a used Bodhran at Tradeup Music in Portland!!

So I will indeed,  travel to the beat of a different drum!

For those of you who still haven’t heard…I am involved in a 100-Day Challenge, put on by Wool&  —  Same dress.  100 days. Part of my reasons for deciding to do this was to simplify my life, especially with the weekly travels.

Today’s goals:

  • Put together a new outfit — something utilitarian
  • Try out the new Drum

What’s in store for today:

Today is a busy day… it’s day 3 of the Bodhran drum challenge at 9 am, and then Rhythm with my Friend Eje from 10 – 12.

I’ll be working on another batch of homemade ginger Kombucha, setting up dog vaccinations, food shopping, and stopping my the Brew Shop for more bottles for the Kombucca

Puffy Lands End vest in pink plaid goes great with Gray.  Ank keep me warm — we had snow yesterday!

I found these Keen Kaci  on sale, and I love them…  Although my daughter suggested I ditch the socks.

Me and my drum — Ann Taylor Loft sweater over the iron gray Woolamina.

Simple, and the layers keep me warm.

In case you were wondering — what is up with the Lip Gloss!!!

I get mine from Ashley aka Momma Starry — and they don’t smear or come off — ever.  And I love the color.  Personally, I layer them. She can show you how.

day 7: coming around the mountain

day 7: coming around the mountain

Yes, she’ll be coming around the mountain when she comes.  Because, today is the day that I drive from Long Beach Washington to Portland… around the mountains, along the Columbia River,  over some hills,  and through small sleepy towns.  I make the drive every week, and then back again to my spot at the beach.

It’s the 7th day, and I am feeling the love of the Dress.  Woolamina and I are still in our honeymoon phase — and i wake in the night thinking of her… and how I can make her look beautiful.  I hope that it never ends… or at least lasts for the next 93 days or so.  Then I will feel comfortable enough to callously cast her aside… perhaps for Sierra, or maybe Ellie.  What can I say… the heart wants what the heart wants… or so they say….

For those of you who still haven’t heard…I am involved in a 100-Day Challenge, put on by Wool&  —  Same dress.  100 days. Part of my reasons for deciding to do this was to simplify my life, especially with the weekly travels.

Today’s goals:

  • Put together a new outfit — comfortable enough for travel
  • Pick and choose wisely: Tuesday is Goodwill shopping day.

What’s in store for today:

Today is a busy day… there is day 2 of the Bodhran drum challenge at 9 am and take off for Portland after that (aka coming around the mountain.)  Once I get there, Brooke, aka #1, and I will head out to go shopping at goodwill, then run into Trade-up Music, and then over to Aztec Willie’s for a little happy hour.  Portland is still in lockdown, but they have opened up seating outside.

Green Vest is from Chico’s,  Blue plaid shirt is another LLBean oldie but goodie.   Boots are KEEN – but I think I sprang a leak in the snow. I’ll have too look for cracks…

Of course, it was snowing… and  I have had them for years — perhaps I can find the cracks in the soles and plug them with SHOE GOO

day 6: do you wear a slip?

day 6: do you wear a slip?

My mom asked me, “do you have to wear a slip with that dress?” And I replied, “Only if you want to.”   Well, today, I wanted to.

It’s the 6th day, and I am having a lot of fun.  I find my self thinking… what if?  Like What if I wear a slip, what if I put a shirt under Woolamina, what if I wear crazy leggings and a sweatshirt, pearls, and Chuck Taylors??

I am in a Facebook group, hosted by Wool&, and I get so much encouragement and so many ideas from the other participants.  So I am starting to try a lot of new things– with things that I already own  — new outfit combinations, trying out makeup, adding jewelry and accessories that I haven’t used for a long time.

And it has been a LOT of fun.

For those of you who still haven’t heard…I am involved in a 100-Day Challenge, put on by Wool&  —  Same dress.  100 days. Part of my reasons for deciding to do this was to simplify my life, especially with the weekly travels.

Today’s goals:

  • Put together a new outfit — and wear a slip!
  • Organize my shirt closet by color a type.
wear a slip

What’s in store for today:

Basically another quiet day on the South Washington coast.  Raining like crazy… which is why I am doing my photos inside that cargo container that holds the wood.   Today, I want to organize my small closet that holds most of my vast collection of shirts, by type first and then by color.  Also… I’d like to get 4 out of my 6 kitchen drawers organized and get a bag together for donations from both my closet and kitchen.

wear a slip

The sweater is from H&M and is a thrift store find.  The Carhartt vest is one of my favorites — fleece lined! – and a gift from Number 1.

The boots — another pair of vintage KEENS.. of course.

wear a slip

WOOLAMINA — is what I call my Rowena Swing Dress from Wool@.  Iron gray and soft merino wool makes it easy to wear all day long.  No itch, and no pilling.

wear a slip

In case you are wondering… I have started wearing this long-lasting lip color that my friend Ashley sells.   One of those things that lasts all day, and doesn’t come off in you mask.  Let me know, and I’ll get her information for you. ( And this is something new for me… but then so is doing mini-photoshoots of my outfits!)

wear a slip

And I started wearing earrings again. These are my favorites — sterling and opals.

And me — hiking up my dress to fix my slip — which i hadn’t noticed was slightly crooked for most of the photos.  All cotton, ordered off of WISH.

wear a slip

So, wear a slip if you like, but you don’t have to.  It does provide an extra layer for warmth, though!

day 5: belted

day 5: belted

Day 5, and I was a bit worried about wearing it belted. I just didn’t want to look like a gray potato sack trussed up in the middle.

I think sometimes we get caught up with notions like this because of something we heard as a child or young person.  Such as  don’t wear white after Labor Day, horizontal stripes make you look fat,  and leather belts on dresses look like hillbillies.

As a chubby teenager, I never wore my shirts tucked in, never wore belts.   And even after I reached adulthood… these misconceptions stayed with me.  I have belts, 2 or 3,  and they fit just fine. But I don’t wear them.

And one year into the pandemic… I have perhaps gained a few pounds.  But I’m sure I am in pretty good company.

So today is a day of reckoning between me and the belt. We are going to let bygones be bygones, and become friends. Me, Woolamina, and the belt.

For those of you who still haven’t heard…I am involved in a 100-Day Challenge, put on by Wool&  —  Same dress.  100 days. Part of my reasons for deciding to do this was to simplify my life, especially with the weekly travels.

Today’s goals:

  • Pick an outfit and make friends with the belt — and get belted!
  • Relax… it is Sunday!
belted

What’s in store for today:

I am looking forward to a quiet day at home: Listen to KNPR, walk to the beach of the rain lets up, knit… and work on my blog.  Oh.. and get belted!

belted

Today, I started out with Woolamina (of course) and then added a soft flannel shirt Made by American Eagle, added the belt and my cross necklace from Mexico/New Orleans…. I had it on for DAY 3.

belted

Boots are by KEEN.  (Are you wondering how many pairs I have??)  SUPER comfortable, waterproof, insulated, and lined with fleece.  Legging tights were from the Gap, I think.

belted

100% wool handknit Irish Fisherman sweater is made by Lock Garman. It is ancient… but will probably out live me. In fact, I would like to be buried in it… but not anytime soon!

And the belt, itself.  I believe it came from the Gap, as well.  Split grain, simple,  and smells like leather should.  It’s been carted around a bunch… just not around me.

belted

And I think it works.  I think belted is a look I am going to repeat.  Shortens the dress up a bit… and that’s a nice change!!

day 4: color me pink

day 4: color me pink

Day 4 and color me pink.    I love the color pink… and have for quite a while.  It just makes me feel happy, and I have it all over my world: pink hats, pink sheets, pink clothes, pink glasses, pink leashes and tote bags.  Pink fountain pens and pink sandals.

So today was pretty much about pink. Woolamina seems to agree… and I am happy about that! Yep… she’s rocking the pink.

For those of you who still haven’t heard…I am involved in a 100-Day Challenge, put on by Wool&  —  Same dress.  100 days. Part of my reasons for deciding to do this was to simplify my life, especially with the weekly travels.

Today’s goals:

  • Pick an outfit that works for cold, drizzly beach weather.
  • Read through Color Me Beautiful… and determine my “colors”
color me pink

By the way.. this was about the only sunny moment of the day — and it lasted about 5 minutes!

What’s in store for today:

It’s a lovely winter day at the coast in Southern Washington.  Mostly drizzly, with bursts of sunshine.  Chilly — Just over freezing when I went out for these photos.

dress and dog

Today, I threw on a waffle knit t-shirt over Woolamina, and covered them both with a  pink, fleece-lined vest, made by Berne .. I think I picked it up in a thrift store.

Boots are by KEEN.  SUPER comfortable — you can wear them for miles.  These amazing socks were from Amazon — wooly and thick!

And the little sterling and turquoise rabbit pin came from a trip to Santa Barbara.

dress and dogs

Coffee mug was a gift… but if you are interested, msg me and I will find out where it came from.

AND … my Christmas Cactus is FINALLY blooming!

Lots of Pink!!

So speaking of colors… I started into my book… Color Me Beautiful…..  And you might imagine my dismay when I first thought I was an AUTUMN color palette — which doesn’t have a shred of PINK in it! ( I know… shocking!)

color me pink

So I called my friend who recommended the book… and sent her some photos of things that you use to determine your color.

This is me… no makeup, natural lighting… warts and all.  I’m trying to figure it all out! Color me pink??

And she knows a lot more about this sort of thing than I do… so she said that she couldn’t be certain — long-distance and all — but that I just might be a summer.  And just because I adore certain colors (like pumpkin) does not mean they are the best on me.  She said to think back to when I wore something and people complimented me — not what I was actually wearing… like Wow, your skin looks great, or I never realized your eyes had so much green.

So I thought about it… and really, I think AM a SUMMER!!  I was just stuck with the thought that summers must all be blond and with blue eyes.

And Summer people can wear lots of pinks and turquoise and lavender…. and that means you can color me happy.

color me pink

However, I still need to work on it some more to be sure — do a “drape test”.  This has been a very insightful and interesting book.  I am looking forward to using their method for purging my closet– make a second pass at decluttering.

day 3: dress and dogs

day 3: dress and dogs

Day 3 for the dress and dogs.  yes… I have two of them.  At first I was concerned that i would be covered with dog hair… I ordered the steel gray #Rowena.  But I must say that it hasn’t been a problem.

Woolamina is the name I chose for my dress Woolamina Merino, to be formal.  And she is holding up beautifully…. dog hair and all.

For those of you who still haven’t heard…I am involved in a 100-Day Challenge, put on by Wool&  —  Same dress.  100 days. Part of my reasons for deciding to do this was to simplify my life, especially with the weekly travels.

What’s in store for today:

It’s a sunny winter day in Portland.  If you have ever seen the show Portlandia — you know how much we cherish the sunshine.  Everyone outside soaking up the vitamin D

But still quite brisk — low 40s.  So I will need to bundle up!!

Woolamina paired with a plaid flannel shirt by Jachs’ Girlfriend .

And my FAVORITE BOOTS, made by Chippewa. You can wear them all day long.

Vest is by Orvis.  I have had this for years, and wear it with everything.  I love it with the Rowena.

Sterling necklace beads are from Mexico, and Pendant was from a stall in the French Market in New Orleans

Today’s outfit worked for me — comfortable, dogproof and yet not sloppy.
