day 29: my dogs and me

day 29: my dogs and me

Life is good for my dogs and me.

Just me and the four-legged children.  The others have fled the nest — two in San Francisco, one in New York, and one in Portland.

I am currently at Number 1’s house in Portland.  She is away, so I have taken over.  Nice.  So if you see me in a lot of different clothes…. well, I am borrowing from her closet!

For those of you new to this blog …I am involved in a 100-Day Challenge, put on by Wool&  —  Same dress.  100 days. (And yes, you can wash it!) Part of my reasons for deciding to do this was to simplify my life, especially with my lifestyle.

What’s in store today:

Cold and snow in Portland.  Yeah… I think I’ll stay in.

So I logged into my zoom rhythm class and beat my bodrhan a bit.  And I worked on learning the sequences for the latest module – shuffles and slides —  it’s for my Appalachian Flatfooting and Clogging class.  I am still  getting the hang of it — but then I started out not knowing ANYTHING! You can track my dancing progress HERE.

I also worked on my SOCK! I could hardly put it down.   Learn more HERE. I LOVE this Self Striping Sock Yarn!  Learn More HERE

Here’s what I came up with for today!

dogs and me

It started out with a button down knitted dress, that I think might be best worn as a duster , or open as a sweater.  It is from Territory Ahead, and haven’t really worn it — mostly because as a dress, it doesn’t seem overly flattering.

dogs and me

Little black boots are GH Bass, but I got them from Goodwill — looks like they were never worn.  Very Comfortable.  And I like the laces.

dogs and me

I think I like the dress belted under this sweater… keeps it from looking all too blobby.

Photobombing by Rainey – Me and my dogs… or one of them.  The other hides when I start taking photos!

dogs and me

Meh… I think I like the sweater open… Just Meh.

It is super comfortable, though.   I borrowed a belt from Number 1, who is a lot smaller, so maybe… if I had a larger belt to go over the red dress….

Thanks for checking in and reading my dogs and me post.  Comment below — do you like red dress open or buttoned?

day 19: sunny

day 19: sunny

Sunny, yesterday my life was filled with rain.

The weather is so unpredictable here in the Pacific Northwest.  Rain yesterday, sun today… and snow coming this weekend.  So we dress in layers, and in the winter… lots of them.  This is working out quite well for Woolamina and me.  And even though the sun was out… it was super chilly.  I even got out a hat!

For those of you new to this blog …I am involved in a 100-Day Challenge, put on by Wool&  —  Same dress.  100 days. (And yes, you can wash it!) Part of my reasons for deciding to do this was to simplify my life, especially with my lifestyle.

What’s in store today:

Two words: beach day!  The dogs and I took a little walk down to the beach.  So pretty, but windy and chilly.

sunny

And here we are coming back, through the field that leads to the beach and back.

I also practiced Appalachian Flatfooting and Clogging,  going over the foundation steps, and working on the sequences. Trying to get down the Tennessee Walking Step!! I made a blog page yesterday — you can see it HERE.

Here’s what I came up with for today!

sunny

I bundled up.. but put on my Sunglasses.  These are prescription — and come from Zenni. They are super easy to order  And at a fraction of the cost… I think these were about $40 shipped — and they are bifocals!

sunny

Boots are by Keen.  I got them to walk the Camino Santiago… and although I didn’t end up in Spain, as planned, I love these boots — you could wear them for weeks… or 600 hundred miles!

sunny

Today’s layers: Woolamina over leggings, socks, and boots, with Gap Coat and thrift store scarf.  And hat as needed!

sunny

This is one of the $1 scarves that I found at the thrift store the other day.  Doesn’t take up much room, but surprisingly warm.

Hat is one that I designed — you can get a FREE PATTERN HERE.

sunny

This is my favorite eyeglass case — since I am pretty much blind without them, I need to carry a case with my sunglasses for driving.  The girls brought me this back from their trip to Paris a few years ago.

sunny

WHEW!

So great to get some sunshine — soak up the vitamin D — and Vitamin Sea! I was happy to be able to make it down to the beach, and I know the dogs were!

bulldog rescue: finding rainey

bulldog rescue: finding rainey

This is Rainey, bulldog rescue and  — Queen of Everything.

She is a special needs pup that we recently adopted through an incredible organization: Lily’s Pad Rescue.

Rainey is a petite bulldog — about 30 lbs, with Spina Bifida.  Although she is fully mobile, she wears diapers to handle incontinence issues.  (I’ve raised 4 kids… and diapering a dog is a piece of cake compared to a baby!)

This sweet girl has captured our hearts!!  Rainey is super affectionate, and a total love bug.  She is a little uncoordinated — so we probably won’t be attending agility competitions — but is eager to learn new things.  But mostly, she just wants to be loved on and snuggled.  Almost completely different than her Brother-Dog, Dude — who is a  cattle dog/terrier mix. Quick and nimble,  he is happiest when he is working. Give him a job, and he’s a satisfied boy.  Together, they make quite a pair.

Here are a series of videos that I made of our special day.

I never considered BULLDOG RESCUE until I ran across a photograph of Rainey online.  And her story touched me. I thought about it for a few days, and  I felt compelled to call.

Although I have had bulldogs before, I have never had a special needs dogs — especially with Spina Bifida.  And I had never gone through bulldog rescue and gotten an older dog (She will be 1 later this month.)   So I had my concerns — would the dog come with bad behaviors, would there be increased medical cost, would she not live as long as other dogs? And what would happen if I had an emergency, or needed to go out of town?  But after thinking about all the possibilities, I knew it was the right thing to do to give this sweet girl a forever home.

At first, I wasn’t sure if I could handle the whole diaper thing.  But I talked a lot with Rachel from Lily’sPadRescue, and she told me about the ongoing assistance and resources available.  I am not in this alone, there is a whole family of special needs dog moms and dads behind me.  And since this is my first special needs dog, I found that very reassuring.

And When I picked her up, Candace gave me some very through hands-on training.  And really — it was a lot easier than I originally thought.

And LilysPadRescue set me up with all the supplies that I would need to take care of her for the first few weeks and to help ease her transition into a new home— including a bed and toys!!

Special needs dogs are not right for everybody, but they might be right for you.

If you think you might find it in y our heart to open your home to a special needs bulldog rescue pup, please contact LilysPadRescue, — the link is below.  And reach out to me, I will be happy to give you honest facts about our experiences.

Rainey likes to sit right next to me while I knit… and we have had to have some firm discussions about yarn and needles not being chew toys.  But, she will get the hang of it.  She has, after all a big brother to show her the ropes.

At 8, the Dude has mastered the art of aloofness.   He is not sure what to think about this rambunctious little ball of fluff that he now shares me… and his space with.  Give it a month, and they will be curled up together, I am sure.

AND — I think I will knit some up for a favorite Charity: Lily’sPadRescue, who helps find forever homes for medically fragile bulldogs. They have an auction/fundraiser coming up this summer.   Maybe pair it up with dog soap for them!!
